Learn The Story Behind The Song That Trace Adkins Almost Turned Away

A lot of work is involved in the creation of a new album. Of course, one of the most important tasks an artist faces is selecting the tracks that will appear on the record.

When it came time to construct his latest album, Something’s Going On, Trace Adkins chose 12 songs that he felt the strongest connection with. But one of those songs took some time for him to warm up to. In fact, he wanted to turn it away after he heard it for the first time!

That song is “Gonna Make You Miss Me,” which has a bit more of a modern sound than Adkins’ fans are used to hearing from him. That’s what threw Adkins off about the track at first, and he let his producer know exactly what he thought.

“I said, ‘Dude, I can’t sing this song. I can’t sing this song.’ It’s a pop-sounding thing,” Adkins told radio.com in an interview about Something’s Going On.

Adkins’ producer eventually convinced him to give “Gonna Make You Miss Me” a try. It didn’t take long for the song to grow on him, and he now considers it to be one of his favorite tracks on the record.

In the “Story Behind the Song” video for “Gonna Make You Miss Me,” Adkins further explains how he came close to rejecting the song: 

“I remember sitting in [Broken Bow Records President] Benny Brown’s office…he played this song for me, and it was a poppy sounding thing, ya know? I said ‘I don’t hear my voice on this song.’ And he said, ‘No I think your voice on this song is gonna make it.'”

Despite his initial hesitations, Adkins came to love “Gonna Make You Miss Me.” But does he have any concerns about what fans may think of its more poppy approach?

“[It] may not be something that people expect to hear me sing,” Adkins said. “But I don’t care.”
