Although Maren Morris wrote the powerful lyrics of “Dear Hate” three years prior to releasing it, the song’s message became more relevant than ever in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Las Vegas’ Route 91 Harvest Festival on October 1, 2017.

Morris teamed up with Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill to release a song she wrote three years ago – and wrote on social media why she waited all this time.

“I wrote this song 3 years ago, recorded it last year with Vince Gill, and always have fans asking when I’ll put it out. I never knew when would be the right time, but I realized today that there’s never a right time. Hate is everywhere, and I’m sick of not doing enough. In the darkest tunnel, there is still love & music,” shared the Grammy winner in a post to Instagram.

“Dear Hate” features Morris and Gill singing the powerful lyrics backed up by just the sounds of their acoustic guitars. Morris and Gill close out the song with a biblical-like sentiment, harmonizing together, “Love’s gonna conquer all.”

The tragedy that hit the country music community when a gunman opened fire on the attendees of the festival struck close to home for Morris, who played the Route 91 Festival one night before.

“We played Route 91 in Vegas the night before last. It was one of my favorite shows and festivals to be on. We were all singing,” she wrote in another Instagram post. “I’m in shock over this unfair, senseless tragedy and heartbroken for the lives taken too soon.”

All the proceeds generated by “Dear Hate” will go directly to the Music City Cares Fund. You can hear the heartbreaking tune below.

Just days after the tragedy, Morris dedicated a live performance of “Dear Hate” to the victims of the senseless tragedy. Watch it below.
