Martina McBride brought her sassy “A” game when she told the PTA where they could shove their hypocritical letter of concern! That is, the Harper Valley PTA!
Back in 2003, McBride performed the international hit “Harper Valley PTA” at the annual Jamboree On The Hill outdoor festival, proudly taking place in what is often referred to as the “Country Music Capital“, Morrison, Ohio.
This scandalous number tells a story of a mother who receives an extremely blunt letter delivered through her daughter by the PTA of the local junior high her child attends. The letter boldly states that the PTA group disapproves of the mother’s provocative clothing choices, in addition to the men she chooses to associate her with. The criticism trails off into the accusation that this mother is raising her daughter incorrectly and is collectively signed by the PTA board members. Driven by anger, this prompt parent marches straight down to the Harper Valley Junior High, daughter at her side, where a PTA meeting was to be held that night. She justifiably makes her dramatic entrance in a tight mini skirt and proceeds to identify various board members and delve into their corrupt personal affairs. This response to the addressed letter exposes the hypocrisy that ensued throughout the board and negates the scrutiny that came directly from the unethical PTA associates.
This bad ass song, originally sang by country singer Jeannie C. Riley, is the epitome of phony facades and behavior, whether we all did in fact witness it from our cliquey school PTA or in any other obnoxious form.
McBride turns up the attitude in her performance with some cheeky facial expressions and fluctuation of her iconic voice that we love so much!
Needless to say, this was quite the performance from both a talent and entertainment aspect! You tell ’em, Martina!
