Making the transition from Disney Channel star to pop star wasn’t an easy feat for Miley Cyrus. She was a role model to young girls, yet was one herself.
As she was finding herself and what type of artist she wanted to be, she became somewhat of a chameleon, transforming completely into each direction her music took her.
Some would say she went a little wild, but now, she has come full circle and is taking advantage of her Nashville roots. Her father, country star Billy Ray Cyrus, who starred alongside her on Hannah Montana, couldn’t be prouder.
“I’m so excited about this album,” Billy Ray says of her new music. “Miley really leaned into her roots with this new album. I hear a lot of influences from The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, Waylon [Jennings], obviously Dolly – there’s a lot of influences in Miley’s roots. Even down to some of the sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd…If you really want to know Miley, this record is a great place to start.”
She’s had past success in the country music genre and has said that her next album will reflect her country roots. Her first release, “Malibu”, is a good look at what’s to come from the singer-songwriter.
Released on Thursday (May 11), Cyrus released the single to iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon, as well as debuted the music video on her YouTube account.

In a recent interview with Billboard magazine, Cyrus spoke about her new single, a tribute to her longtime love, actor Liam Hemsworth, who is often spotted surfing in Malibu.
“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam… So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?” she said in the interview.
Her dog Emu stars in the video with her, as she sings at the beach, in a grass field, and near a waterfall. Watch the music video for “Malibu” below and let us know what you think in the comments.
