Bursting onto country radio like a bull smashing through a glass wall, these two iconic Kentucky crooners made massive waves with their debut single, “Hillbilly Shoes.”
Making a name for themselves as one of the hottest country music duos in years, Montgomery Gentry didn’t hold anything back with their very first single and it set the tone for years of hits and great music to come.
“Hillbilly Shoes” broke out onto the charts just two weeks before it was released on February 22, 1999, and soared high. Landing inside the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, the song earned critical acclaim from reviewers.
In one review from Billboard, Deborah Evans Price hails the tune as a “high-energy brand of traditional country blended with loads of outlaw attitude” and that same sentiment has been echoed by fans for years since.
Although more than two decades have passed since the song’s release, “Hillbilly Shoes” remains one of the most popular and impressive entries into country music’s legacies – and is a track that keeps on giving.
