Muscle Shoals Audio Of ‘Was I Right Or Wrong’ Will Take You Way Back To Skynyrd’s Early Days
on Jul 11, 2017
All Lynyrd Skynyrd fans know that the band’s debut album was titled (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd). Released in 1973, the album served as the world’s introduction to the band that would go on to become leaders in Southern rock.
But only the most hardcore of Skynyrd’s fans know that there was almost an album that came before Pronounced. That album was recorded in 1971 and 1972 at the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama. However, the album fell through, and the recordings were shelved.
That is, until 1978. Following the plane crash of 1977, Skynyrd released the compilation album Skynyrd’s First and… Last, which contained never-before-heard recordings at the time. The album sold over one million units within months of its release.
One of the recordings on the album was that of a song titled “Was I Right or Wrong.” The song didn’t appear on any of Skynyrd’s previously released albums. Therefore, it was quite a thrill to the fans who bought a copy of First and… Last.
“Was I Right or Wrong” was written by guitarist Gary Rossington and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant. The song tells the sad story of a man who goes off in pursuit of fame to prove his father wrong. He finds the fame, but returns home to discover that his father has passed away:
“Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong. Oh, such a sad song. First I got lost, then I got found. But the ones that I love are in the ground…”
Even though the recording of “Was I Right or Wrong” isn’t brand new any more, Skynyrd fans still consider it to be a priceless treasure. Now you can treat yourself to the sounds of the song by tuning in to its audio clip below.
This song, and so many others, prove why Skynyrd was destined for stardom from the start.
