Nicole Kidman Reveals The Heartbreaking Lesson She Learned From Keith Urban’s Sobriety

PEOPLE

Over ten years has come and gone since Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman met at the GDay USA gala in 2005, and what a difference that time has made. At first glance the two may seem like an unlikely pairing, but time has proven just how right they really are for each other. However, their life hasn’t always been one filled with romance.

Just a few months after their wedding in 2006, Urban checked into Betty Ford Center to treat his addiction to alcohol. Kidman, who was in the middle of a press tour promoting her film Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, dropped everything to fly out and support him in his recovery.

Since his recovery, Urban has repeatedly spoken in high regard of Kidman’s supportive spirit during his rehabilitation, sharing to CBS that, “meeting her and getting married wasn’t life-changing, it was life-beginning.” In a recent interview with Jess Cagle for PEOPLE magazine, Kidman is now opening up on her side of it all.

“You can’t save somebody, they have to save themselves,” said Kidman. “Which was a very big thing for people like me who go, ‘I can take care of you. I can do it.’ It was a very big lesson because as much as you think ‘I can do all the work for him…I can help’…At some point you just have to say ‘I love you and I’m here when you decide to do the work’.”

She goes on to say that while you may not be able to save someone, you can offer them the love and support they need to get them through it. The Oscar-winning actress continues that the road to recovery is difficult, but the life waiting on the other side is “extraordinary.”

Such an incredibly powerful interview. You can watch the full interview below and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!
