Maintaining Legacy Of A “King”
Although Elvis and Priscilla Presley‘s marriage eventually ended in divorce, the two remained friends after their separation. Even to this day, all you have to do is listen to Priscilla talk about Elvis to realize that she still cares about him deeply.
It’s her love for Elvis that has pushed Priscilla to maintain his legacy after his death. She is responsible for helping turn Graceland into a major tourist attraction, and also leads the charge in releasing remastered music, new films, and other projects relating to Elvis.
In addition to all of that, she is also the mother to his only child, Lisa Marie. She was only a young child when her father died, and was actually staying with him at the time.
First Thoughts Before The Truth Was Revealed
During an interview with ET, Priscilla shared how before she knew of Elvis’ death, she thought maybe something had happened to Lisa Marie. She explained the situation:
“My sister and I were going out for an appointment and she stopped me in my feet as I was picking her up….and Dad called and said [Elvis’ road manager] Joe Esposito was trying to reach you and try to talk to you. The first thing I thought about was my daughter because my daughter was visiting and was supposed to come home that day because school started.”
Lisa Marie was just fine, but Priscilla didn’t know that at the time. She said she rushed to get home as fast as she could, saying she thinks she ran every red light on the way back.
Learning Elvis Had Died
Her phone was already ringing before she even had time to get her key in the door. Once she answered it, she learned what was wrong…Elvis was gone.
Priscilla relived that heartbreaking moment:
“It was so devastating that I just went to my room and tried to contemplate how this happened, and what happened, and just stayed there until they sent a plane for me. They sent a jet to come, and going into that house and hearing all the people — especially his father, who I will, to this day, still remember him crying in such grief, howling — that it still resonates the loss and the impact.”
Hearing her talk about it now, you can still detect the sadness as she remembers the day we lost Elvis. Since he was so beloved, his death had a profound impact on the entire world, especially his fans.
