Reba McEntire Reveals The Lessons She Learned From Her ‘Tough’ Year Following Divorce

Over the past year, Reba McEntire‘s professional life has continued to flourish. Her album, Love Somebody, was a chart-topper, she had a series of successful shows with Brooks & Dunn in Las Vegas, and she started a new clothing line. 

But personally, the past year has been a hard one for McEntire. After 26 years of marriage, McEntire and her husband, Narvel Blackstock, announced their decision to divorce on August 3, 2015. Two months later their divorce was finalized, and McEntire has slowly opened up about the split in the time that has passed since then.

McEntire has openly admitted that it was hard for her to come to terms with the divorce, even going so far as to say she “didn’t want it in any shape, form, or fashion.” But she said her faith helped her pull through, revealing,”it keeps me sane and it keeps me hopeful.“

On Tuesday (September 27), McEntire was being honored as the Artist of the Year at the 2016 Nashville Business Journal’s Women in Music City Awards. In addition to speaking about the advice she’d give to her younger self, McEntire opened up about her “tough” year following her divorce and the lessons she learned from it:

“This year has been a really tough one for me, so what I have learned during the past year is that you can’t look back. You can’t say, ‘Man, if I had just done this. If I had just done that.’ What you have to do is live for the day and treasure it, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow’s not here yet.”

Despite the personal hardships she’s faced, McEntire reassured everyone that her career is still just as strong as ever. 

“You’ve let me be a part of this business for forty years,” she said. “Please don’t run me off now.”
