‘Songs About Me’ Shuts Down City Slickers Who Claim Country Music Is Just A ‘Hillbilly Thing’

Trace Adkins is as country as they come. His country boy persona is as big as his deep baritone voice. The only thing is, it’s not really a persona…it’s who Adkins is.

Country music and country singers often come under fire from outsiders who claim that the genre is only a “hillbilly thing.” These people have the assumption that all country songs are about beer, trucks, and lost dogs, but any true country fan knows that’s not the case.

In 2004, Adkins released a song to disprove such claims once and for all. Released as the lead single off of his album of the same name, “Songs About Me” hit the country airwaves and quickly fought its way to the second spot on the charts.

The song explores the discrimination that country music faces, as the narrator chats with a man he sits next to on the plane. When Adkins explains to the man what he does for a living, the man says he’s never been a fan of country music, saying “But I’ve never been crazy/’bout that twang and trains and hillbilly thing.

Adkins explains that the man’s beliefs about country music are incorrect, saying country songs are songs that all people are easily able to connect to. Because country songs are songs about relatable topics, such as “Songs about loving and living/And good hearted women and family and God,” Adkins says that people feel like they are songs about themselves.

The music video for “Songs About Me” follows the story described in the song. The man Adkins meets on the plane decides to come to his concert that night. Soon enough, the man realizes that everything Adkins said about country music was true, and he makes his way to the front row next to the stage.

Adkins’ “Songs About Me” proves why country music has such a strong and passionate fan base. Plus, it’s just a fun song to listen to, and you can in the music video below!

Just like Adkins set country music on fire with “Songs About Me” in 2004, he’s continuing to light up the genre with his lively new single, “Lit.” Released as the second single off of his upcoming untitled album, “Lit” definitely embodies all of the qualities of a good country song that Adkins described in “Songs About Me” all those years ago. “Lit” is about family, fun, and of course, a lovely woman.
