Southern Rock Meets Northern California In Skynyrd’s Sizzlin’ Winterland Performance Of ‘Gimme Back My Bullets’

Who would have thought that a former ice skating rink would one day become one of the most iconic music venues in rock history? That’s exactly what happened in the case of the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California.

Although Winterland is no longer standing, the memories of the great shows there will last forever. The venue served as the host to some of the most legendary groups in history, including The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd

Skynyrd got the chance to perform at Winterland on two occasions. Their first show was in 1975 and their second took place in 1976. That second show timed up perfectly with the release of their album Gimme Back My Bullets.

It only seemed appropriate for Skynyrd to perform the title track off of their new album while they were there, so they did just that. The tune was basically brand new to audience at the time, but now it’s considered to be one of the band’s greatest compositions.

Watching this performance, it doesn’t surprise us that “Gimme Back My Bullets” caught on so fast. The performance is delightfully rowdy, and features plenty of Skynyrd’s stellar guitar work.

Skynyrd’s Winterland gig also put lead singer Ronnie Van Zant‘s talent on full display. We never cease to be amazed by his skill, which is as evident as ever in this clip of “Gimme Back My Bullets. Seriously, just listen to him in this! You can catch the performance below.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd & Second Helping Live’ is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats – it’s the perfect gift for the Lynyrd Skynyrd fan in your life. Buy it here on Amazon!
