On the television special An Evening Of Country Greats, Mindy McCready paid tribute to a country legend, Tammy Wynette.

Known for her vibrant storytelling and ruling the country charts in the early 1970s, Wynette’s most famous and recognized song is by far “Stand By Your Man,” which caused quite a stir when it was released in 1968.

Written by Wynette and songwriter Billy Sherrill in just 15 minutes, “Stand By Your Man” stated that a woman should stick by their husband, no matter what their shortcomings were. The song was criticized early on, but still became a massive hit and is now considered one of the greatest country songs of all time.

When paying tribute to a legend like Wynette, many songs come to mind, but none more so than “Stand By Your Man,” which is why McCready performed it at the television special.

“Tammy could create pictures in your mind and touch your soul as she sang about a broken relationship on her loyalty to her man,” McCready said introducing the song. “Her lyrics were complicated and as emotional as her personal life. This is just one of her 20 No. 1 hits.”

After McCready sang the first few lyrics, the camera cut to Wynette’s widow and husband of 20 years, George Richey, who looked very emotional. You can see someone holding his hand very tight.
