By now, everyone knows that Chris Stapleton is a wickedly talented vocalist. But before his history-making performance at the 2015 CMA Awards with Justin Timberlake, only few knew of Stapleton’s vocal talent.
Before his big break, Stapleton was known primarily as one of the most well-respected songwriters in Nashville. Over the years he’s penned hits for everyone from George Strait, to Luke Bryan, to Darius Rucker.
One artist that has relied on Stapleton’s songs more than once is Josh Turner. Stapleton first wrote a song for Turner when he teamed up with Chris DuBois and Jace Everett to pen a romantic tune called “Your Man.” The well-written lyrics and Turner’s vocal delivery were the perfect combination, and “Your Man” flew to the top of the charts.
Three years later, Turner recorded another song that was co-written by Stapleton, titled “Another Try.” The song is the opposite of “Your Man,” as the narrator is a heartbroken man vowing to make it right if he ever finds love again.
Stapleton and Turner must make a good team, because “Another Try” was another big hit. It broke into the Top 20 on the country charts, and also found its way into the Top 100 on the pop charts.
Every now and then, Stapleton will perform one of the songs that he wrote for another artist. An audio clip of Stapleton singing “Another Try” surfaced online, and let us tell you…it’s a work of art.
As we’ve learned by now, Stapleton is a master at portraying emotion. The piercing heartbreak behind the words of “Another Try” come through clearly in Stapleton’s voice as he sings.
Stapleton’s connection to the song as the writer gives his performance a sense of honesty that makes it all the more powerful. What else can we say? This performance is absolutely extraordinary.
