Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles came back together 15 years after their first song, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” for the new single and video, “Do What You Can.”

Bon Jovi wrote the song, “Do What You Can” in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. An Instagram caption reading, “If you can’t do what you want… do what you can,” inspired the song. The caption accompanied a photo of Bon Jovi washing dishes at his food bank.

This is the second collaboration between the two artists. The first being in 2005 with the award-winning song “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” which topped the country charts.

In an article on CMT he talked about the song and why he asked Jennifer to be a part of it saying, “In 2005 Jennifer helped BON JOVI take ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home’ to number one on the country charts. It was her powerful and emotion filled voice that I hope will carry us back onto the country airwaves again to share this uplifting message of unity.”

Jennifer also shared how she felt about teaming up with Bon Jovi again, saying, “Being invited to sing with Bon Jovi back in 2005 on ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home’ was a real blessing as an artist and in my career, I could not be happier to continue that amazing musical story on our new duet ‘Do What You Can.’ (Or should I say ‘Duet What You Can.’)”

The two made the announcement about them joining together on this duet and talked about the writing process of the song on September 15, 2020, in a Zoom video.
