Legendary Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies At 74

Bonnie Tyler, the legendary vocalist behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” died on July 8. The news came shortly after Tyler awoke from a medically induced coma in mid-June.

According to reports, the 74-year-old artist underwent intestinal surgery after suffering a sudden medical emergency while overseas back in May. Following the procedure, doctors placed Tyler in the coma to aid her recovery and stabilize her condition.

Tyler’s team announced the news of her passing in a July 9 social media post.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in [the] hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read.

Who Was Bonnie Tyler?

Bonnie Tyler first rose to international fame with her powerful, raspy vocals and emotional performances. Born June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, Tyler began her professional music career in the 1970s before becoming one of the most recognizable voices of the decade.

Tyler earned her first major international hit with “It’s a Heartache” in 1977. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” later became her signature song and topped charts around the world.

Fans Gather To Honor Bonnie Tyler’s Life & Legacy

On Saturday (August 15), fans gathered to pay their respects to Tyler.

A procession was held for the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer in her home country of Wales. Her funeral will take place on Monday (August 17).

Fans lined Newton Road in Mumbles, Swansea, to honor the singer as she was brought back home. Photos from the emotional scene show hundreds of fans lining the street as a black hearse slowly made its way past.

Others gathered outside Tyler’s home on nearby Mumbles Road, where fans had left floral tributes in her honor. She reportedly lived in both Portugal and Wales.

The celebration of life will be held at Swansea Minster. Following the service, Tyler will be taken to her hometown of Skewen, where her family will hold a private service.
