Super Bowl Halftime Entertainment Continues To Divide

The line was drawn in the sand months ago when the conservative organization Turning Point USA announced it would be putting on an alternative to the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which featured a performance by Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny.

Dubbed the “All-American Halftime Show,” and billed as a “celebration of faith, family, and freedom,” the lineup for TPUSA’s event remained a mystery until a week prior to the Super Bowl.

With Kid Rock headlining, performers at the counter-programming event included Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, and Lee Brice.

While Sec. of War Pete Hegseth endorsed the “All-American Halftime Show,” even taping a video statement that preceded the start of the event, President Donald Trump remained silent on TPUSA’s effort, instead focusing his ire on what he perceived to be a “terrible” performance by Bad Bunny.

Still, not everyone has been silent about TPUSA’s program, with singer-songwriter Zach Bryan being one of its most prominent critics from within the music industry.

Days after the Super Bowl, Bryan continued his takedown of the “All-American Halftime Show,” posting a video of himself parodying Brantley Gilbert’s performance of “Dirt Road Anthem.”

Gilbert’s humorous video response, however, ensured that the laughs went both ways.

Zach Bryan Parodies Brantley Gilbert’s “Dirt Road Anthem” Performance

Opening the “All-American Halftime Show” was Brantley Gilbert, who prefaced his performance of his 2008 song “Dirt Road Anthem” by giving a shoutout to Jason Aldean, who covered the country rap hit on his 2010 album My Kinda Party.

The song, which features quick verses of rap with a ballad-like country chorus, was performed with passion by Brantley.

Notably, Gilbert avoided accusations of lip-syncing, unlike headliner Kid Rock whose performance of “Bawitdaba” was called into question.

Regardless, Zach Bryan honed in on “Dirt Road Anthem,” posting a video of himself and his friend, content creator Harley Carmichael, singing the song with changed lyrics.

This post followed Bryan sharing his opinion about TPUSA’s event, which read:

I don’t care what side you’re on, a bunch of adults throwing temper tantrums and their own halftime show is embarrassing as hell and the most cringe sh*t on the planet.”

He had also shared a video of Carmichael watching the “All-American Halftime Show” on his iPhone while shielding his eyes from the televised broadcast of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, writing, “What Kid Rock actually thinks is happening across America.”

In their video parodying “Dirt Road Anthem,” the lyrics have been changed to the trivial subject of “chili on a hot dog.”

Singing, “Chili on a hot dog, talkin’ ’bout chili on a hot dog,” the bit goes on for some time — and with some profanity — and can be viewed here:

When Brantley Gilbert got wind of this, he took it upon himself to respond in a bold manner.

Watch Brantley Gilbert’s Response

Taking the lyrics of Zach Bryan and Harley Carmichael’s parody of “Dirt Road Anthem” at face value, Brantley Gilbert responded with a video of himself in his kitchen eating — you guessed it — chili on a hot dog.

It’s a messy affair, with cheese and chili getting wiped across his shirt throughout, but it demonstrates that Gilbert can take a joke, and make one, too.

At one point during Gilbert’s video, which he posted as a side by side with Bryan and Carmichael’s video, Gilbert says, “He can climb all the fences he wants to, he’s not getting my chili dog. Not happening.”

This sentiment, which alludes to a dispute between Bryan and country bad boy Gavin Adcock, was also shared in Gilbert’s caption for the video, with Gilbert tagging Bryan to ensure he saw it.

Gilbert added, “That’s a good song.”

In the comments, Jason Aldean replied with a clap emoji, saying, “Best song I’ve heard from that guy.”

Continuing the joke, Harley Carmichael filmed a brief music video for his version of the song with Zach Bryan, featuring him select a pair of gas station hot dogs with chili.
