Nicole Kidman Files Divorce Papers One Day After News Broke Of Her Separation From Keith Urban
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has filed for divorce from her husband of 19 years, country music superstar Keith Urban.
PEOPLE confirmed the news of Kidman’s filing. This development comes one day after it was widely reported that Kidman and Urban had separated earlier this summer.
The Tennessean further confirmed the news, citing court records that show Kidman filed for divorce in the Davidson County Circuit Court in Tennessee on Tuesday (September 30). The Tennessean reports that “irreconcilable differences” was listed as the reason for the couple’s separation on the divorce complaint.
The outlet says the divorce filing includes “a marital dissolution agreement and parenting plan with a child support worksheet.”
Urban and Kidman share two daughters, Sunday (age 17) and Faith (age 14). The Tennessean reports that Kidman “is asking the court to name her the primary residential parent.”
TMZ broke the news about the couple’s separation. Their report cited unnamed sources that claimed Urban and Kidman had been living separately for several months.
They alleged that Kidman had been “holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone.”
Multiple anonymous sources claim to have insight into the dynamic between Urban and Kidman in recent months, and why she chose to file for divorce now. But these reports remain unverified.
The couple last appeared on the red carpet together at the ACM Awards on May 8. The last time Urban posted about Kidman on social media was the following day, May 9.
Kidman last shared a photo of Urban on her Instagram feed for their 19th anniversary on June 25.
Keith Always Gave Nicole Credit For Helping Him Get Sober
The news of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s divorce comes as a shock to fans. The couple was known for being incredibly affectionate on the red carpet, and they consistently showed their support for each other’s projects.
Urban and Kidman met in January 2005 at a Hollywood event honoring Australia called G’Day LA. They started dating six months later and were married on June 25, 2006, in Sydney, Australia.
Just a few months after they wed, Urban entered rehab at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. He announced in January 2007 that he had completed the program.
Since then, Urban has often shared how Kidman was instrumental in helping him get sober. He also thanked her by releasing a song in 2009 titled “Thank You,” which has the following lyrics:
“And I thank you for my heart / I thank you for my life / And I thank god for grace and mercy / And that you became my wife.”
As of press time, neither Urban nor Kidman has released a personal statement about their divorce. The couple’s reps did not respond to PEOPLE‘s request for a comment.
