What was supposed to be a fun night out turned into a nightmare for carnival goers on Sunday night. In a terrifying moment captured on video, a carnival ride full of people is seen plummeting to the ground.

The incident took place at the Phase 8 amusement park in India where 50 riders were on a “drop tower” ride similar to a carousel that raises riders in the air then falls. But, instead of stopping, the ride fell all the way to the ground, injuring 16 people

Footage shows the carousel-like ride crashing to the ground, hitting with incredible force. The impact ejected some riders from their seats, despite them being strapped in.

In the accompanying footage, a lit-up circular carriage is seen plummeting down and crash-landing on the platform with frightening force, sending several riders flying out of their seats — despite them being strapped in. The clip ends with good Samaritans helping load several injured riders into a police van as there were reportedly no ambulances at the fairgrounds, according to Jam Press.

Local media reports that some victims were as young as 10-years-old. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. Some riders were taken to local hospitals where they are receiving treatment for unknown injuries.

An eyewitness told the Hindustan Times that fair organizers “fled the scene” and event bouncers threatened those who tried to help.

The cause of the malfunction remains unclear at this time, but police have launched an investigation and have vowed that “strict action will be taken against the guilty.”
