Carrie Underwood Showcases New Single, ‘Drinking Alone,’ In CMA Awards Performance
on Nov 13, 2019
In addition to hosting the 2019 CMA Awards, Carrie Underwood performed not once, but twice during the ceremony.
Her first performance came at the start of the show, when she joined a group of female artists to honor the iconic women of country music. Two of the talented performers that sang with Underwood were her guest co-hosts, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton.

Underwood also performed solo a little later in the ceremony. She used her performance slot to toss the spotlight on her newest single, “Drinking Alone.”
Fans first got the hint that Underwood would make “Drinking Alone” a single when she revealed she would be singing it at the CMA Awards. Days later, she made the official announcement.
The news was shared alongside an image that shows Underwood wearing a sheer outfit and fedora hat.

“Drinking Alone” has Underwood taking on the role of a lonely woman in a bar. While there, she sees a man who appears to be experiencing his own heartache. She sings to him, saying, “Tonight all I need is a stranger, Lips with a whiskey chaser, And a corner booth kiss to make me forget that he’s gone.”
Underwood’s most devoted fans are already familiar with the sizzlin’ track. It was featured on her 2018 album Cry Pretty, and was part of the setlist on her Cry Pretty Tour 360.
Her performances of “Drinking Alone” were a standout part of every show. During the performance, she would don a hat and sing into an old-fashioned microphone while lounging on a chaise.
Those same elements carried over to Underwood’s performance of “Drinking Alone” at the CMA Awards, which featured a saxophone player and the same old-school vibe.
Like on the cover art for the single, Underwood donned a sheer outfit for her CMA Awards performance. She wore a jumpsuit-like piece, with see-through fabric on the legs.
Underwood worked the length of the stage and interacted with her band as she belted the notes to the song’s chorus. Everyone in the crowd seemed visibly impressed, and gave her a standing ovation when she finished the song!
