The next year, he ran the Silo District Marathon’s half-marathon, which is 13.1 miles. That year, he pushed baby Crew – who wasn’t even  a year old yet – in a stroller the entire way.

The marathon took a hiatus, but it returned in full force in 2022! This time Chip ran the 5k, or 3.1 miles, and it was a bittersweet race. He and Joana started the Silo District Marathon to help raise money for rare cancer research, with all of the funds going to the foundation Brave Like Gabe.

Brave Like Gabe was founded by professional runner Gabriele Anderson Grunewald who was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare type of cancer in 2009. In total, due to the cancer tumors, she had her salivary gland and her thyroid removed, as well as a five-by-six-inch cancerous tumor from her liver over the course of seven years. In 2017, she had 12 inoperable tumors in her liver, and founded Brave Like Gabe a year later, even running the 5k at the Silo District Marathon in April 2019. She passed away on June 11, 2019, two weeks before her 33rd birthday.

For the 2022 race, Chip was joined by his three-year-old son Crew, and this time, he wasn’t in a stroller! Crew had a bib of his own, which had “3.1” on it, meaning he was doing the 5k with his dad! Chip took an adorable video of Crew running alongside him wearing knee socks and a sweatband around his head. He was giving people high-fives and looked absolutely adorable!

On April 23, Chip also shared a series of photos from the 5k, which took place one day before the marathon. It showed Crew’s incredible running form and all the other people who came out to run the 5k!
