Death Toll Climbs To 132 Following Disasterous Flooding In Texas

Chris and Morgane Stapleton are stepping up to help in the aftermath of the Texas floods.

Catastrophic flooding struck the Texas Hill Country on Independence Day (July 4th). NBC News reports that the Guadalupe River surged up to 26 feet near Kerrville. The floodwaters tore through the area, destroying countless structures and claiming dozens of lives.

According to a July 13 report from USA Today, the death toll has climbed to 132.

27 of the individuals killed in the flood were campers or counselors from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls located along the Guadalupe River.

Amid the devastation and heartbreak, there have been stories of hope and resilience.

A young man named Matthew Crowder rescued a mother and her children by alerting them that they needed to leave their home. They reunited a few days later, and the mother, Crissy Eliashar, called Crowder an “angel” for his actions.

One family was forced to leave their dog behind when he disappeared in the chaos as the floodwaters approached their home. When they returned, they discovered their dog was safe inside their washing machine.

Coast Guard Swimmer Scott Ruskan has been hailed as a hero after he rescued 165 people from the flood. But he feels that the children he rescued were the true heroes.

The real heroes, I think, were the kids on the ground,” he told GMA. “Those guys are heroic, and they were dealing with some of the worst times of their lives, and they were staying strong. That helped inspire me to get in there and help them out.”

Chris And Morgane Stapleton Step Up To Help With Massive Donation Toward Relief Efforts

Many celebrities and everyday people have chipped in to help with flood relief efforts. Country artists such as Robert Earl Keen and George Strait are leading the charge by organizing upcoming benefit concerts.

Singer Josh Weathers already held a virtual benefit concert that helped raise over $430K for relief efforts.

Others, such as various professional sports teams, Raising Cane’s owner Todd Graves, and Yellowstone star Cole Hauser, have donated funds and supplies to help Texans during their time of need.

Now, country music star Chris Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, are also pitching in to help.

The Stapletons’ charitable fund, Outlaw State of Kind, announced on July 12 that it was donating $1 million to support flood relief efforts in Texas:

Outlaw State of Kind has donated $1 million to support national and local organizations providing flood relief in Texas,” they shared in a statement on social media.

Outlaw State of Kind listed the organizations they split their $1 million donation among, including the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, Texas Search and Rescue, World Central Kitchen, and Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation.
