The CMA Awards live show hasn’t started yet, but just as they’ve done in years before, the Country Music Association is handing out a few of its awards early.

During Good Morning America Wednesday morning (November 9), the Musical Event of the Year winners were announced. Up for this year’s trophy were the following:

“Beers On Me” — Dierks Bentley with BRELAND and HARDY

“If I Didn’t Love You” — Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood

“Longneck Way To Go” — Midland (featuring Jon Pardi)

“Never Wanted To Be That Girl” — Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde

“Never Say Never” — Cole Swindell (with Lainey Wilson)

And the winner is….

“Never Wanted To Be That Girl” by Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde!

Earlier this year, Carly Pearce and Ashely McBryde took the song to the top of the charts and became only the second female duet in the last 30 years to do so. “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” was also written by the pair along with Shane McAnally, and was a song that, unfortunately, many can relate to.

“So many people have been where this song takes you … it’s so real and feels so raw. Having Ashley’s emotive voice tell this story with me really drives the message so you feel it no matter which side you may have been on,” Pearce said in an interview.
“Writing this song strengthened all our friendships and taught us more about one another and ourselves,” McBryde added. “Nobody wants to be the other one.”

The song also earned the ladies the 2022 Academy of Country Music Award for Music Event of the Year in March.

Tune in to ABC Wednesday night (November 9) at 8/7 CST to see unforgettable performances and more winners announced.
