Lit Firework Thrown Into Convertible At Intersection, “Do I Still Have My Fingers?”
on Jul 06, 2021
Nashville police are looking for the person(s) responsible for hurling a lit firework into a top-down convertible at a downtown intersection July 4th.
Dashcam footage captured by the victim’s friend showed a white car pull up next to the convertible that had stopped at a red light. A passenger in the backseat of the white car rolled their window, lit a large firework, and threw it into the convertible before speeding off. The driver of the convertible is seen trying to grab the firework as it explodes, first with a small explosion followed by a larger one.
20-year-old Colin Kirby, the owner of the convertible, recalled the incident to WKRN, saying:
“My first question is what in the world just happened and do I still have my fingers? As soon as they threw it, they started laughing and such at me. I don’t know if they were laughing at me, or just thought it was funny, but I ain’t laughing.”
Kirby said that the firework bounced off of his head and landed on the convertible top, which was pulled down, resulting in roughly $3,000 in damage. The driver also suffered burns to his hands and is having trouble hearing after the explosion.
“I want to see Metro catch them,” Colin said. “I want to see them put the driver and the one that threw it away for sure, and I want them to pay for the damage for my car.”
“I really would like Metro to make an example out of this so people don’t do this,” he added. “I hate to say throw book at them. I hate to see peoples lives ruined over dumb stuff, but like I said, what if there were kids in the backseat or a whole family’s car right there? It could have killed people.”
Kirby’s mother, Kathy, shared the footage of the attack on social media with a caption detailing the incident. “We are so fortunate that it did not blow up when it hit him in the head. He could have been badly injured and he might have lost his hearing. As it is he has a burned hand and he still can’t hear well.”
Officials believe the attack to be random and are currently investigating the incident. Watch the dashcam footage in the video below.
