Four days after beloved actress Diane Keaton passed away, her family revealed her cause of death.
In a statement released to PEOPLE, Diane Keaton’s family shared that she died of pneumonia on October 11. They also thanked fans for the outpouring of support.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement read.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
PEOPLE was the first to report on Keaton’s death. A spokesperson told the outlet at the time that no further details were available about the 79-year-old’s death and asked for privacy “in this moment of great sadness.”
Diane Keaton had an impressive career spanning more than six decades.
Keaton was best known for her roles in Father of the Bride, Annie Hall, and First Wives Club.

She was born in Los Angeles in 1946 and got her career start in high school singing and acting clubs. After graduation she furthered her entertainment career pursuits with a nightclub act as a singer, as an acting school student, and eventually as an understudy on Broadway’s production of Hair.
Keaton earned a Tony nomination for her first leading Broadway role in Play It Again, Sam. Her film debut followed a year later with a role in Lovers and Other Strangers before landing her breakout role in The Godfather in 1972.

In 1977, Keaton won her first and only Academy Award for her role in Annie Hall. Over the course of her career, Diane Keaton earned four Academy Award nominations, resulting in one win, twelve Golden Globe Awards with two wins, Screen Actors Guild Award nods, Daytime Emmy nominations, and many more.
Diane Keaton never married. She was the mom of two children, a son and a daughter, whom she adopted in her 50s.
