Questions Swirl As Sen. Mitch McConnell Reportedly Remains Hospitalized After Being Found “Unconscious”

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY, who is 84, has appeared to be struggling with his health for several years now, but new audio indicates he may have been found “unconscious” at his home last month.
On Wednesday, July 1, audio was uploaded to X, formerly Twitter, of EMS dispatch in Washington, D.C., reportedly responding to one of McConnell’s known residences.
The incident in question occurred on June 14 — which was 26 days ago, as of Tuesday, July 10 — and McConnell has not been seen publicly since.
The U.S. Senate has been out of session since June 26, and will not return to session until July 13. Key votes on the SAVE America Act, which pushes for enforcing voter ID ahead of the midterm elections, and other legislation remain up in the air.
While it is presently unclear if McConnell is on the path to returning to the Senate, his office released a brief update about his health published on July 6 by The Independent, which notes that McConnell “appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.”
The statement went on to say that McConnell “is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
A similar statement received by the Associated Press on July 2 stated he “continue to improve.”
Reportedly, he even had conversations at length with Republican leadership in the Senate as recently as July 6 and July 7.
However, when asked by a reporter aboard Air Force One on July 8 how McConnell was doing, President Donald Trump said, “I have no idea how he’s doing.”

In video obtained by CNN on July 10 from a neighbor of Sen. Mitch McConnell, the moment that McConnell was reportedly loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher on June 14 can be seen.

Uploaded online by independent Capitol Hill correspondent Desirée Townsend, the dispatch audio illustrates how on June 14, at 8:36 a.m., a call was made from an individual at McConnell’s address requesting ALS, or Advanced Life Support, for an “unconscious” individual.
Then, at 8:44 a.m., another set of communications were captured on the scanner, with an EMS worker telling dispatch, “CPR in progress.”
Dispatch replies that this is in regard to “cardiac arrest.”
While the identity of this individual was not disclosed, prior to the release of this audio, it was not clear why McConnell hospitalized.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning,” a statement from McConnell’s spokesperson simply read on June 14, according to NBC News. “He is receiving excellent care.”
On June 22, NBC News reached out to McConnell, and received a follow-up statement from his spokesperson, reading, “Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week.”

Senate Majority Leader Thune Gives Update On McConnell
McConnell was the Senate minority leader up until 2025, and had served as either majority leader or minority leader — depending upon periods of Republican majority — since 2007.
In 2025, Sen. John Thune, R, SD, became majority leader of the Senate.
Notably, McConnell has not been a consistent ally of President Donald Trump, turning on the president following the events of Jan. 6, 2021, before endorsing him for reelection in the 2024 presidential race.
Prior to the ongoing medical situation that began on June 14, McConnell has been expected to be retiring at the end of 2026.
Early on July 7, Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, replied to a post on X inquiring about silence from Republicans about the senator’s health.
Lee wrote, “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition.”

Responding to the ongoing questions about McConnell’s health, a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-SD, said on July 7 that Thune spoke with McConnell at length on July 6, telling Politico that they “had a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security.”
Politico also notes that Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-WY, spoke to McConnell on July 7.
On July 8, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has publicly requested an update on McConnell’s health, writing a letter to McConnell that states:
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and well-being, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate. As Governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.”
As a child, McConnell survived polio, with the Associated Press noting his mother took him to the famed Warm Springs, Ga, polio treatment center that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt — who also had polio — visited. McConnell’s office has attributed past falls at the Senate to the “lingering effects of polio in his left leg.”
Beyond falling at the Capitol, McConnell has had a few moments of apparent confusion while on camera, with an incident during a news conference in 2023 gaining wide coverage:

Earlier this year, in February, Fox News reported that McConnell was hospitalized for eight days with flu-like symptoms.

Actions Taken By McConnell’s Wife And Eldest Daughter Raise Questions About The Senator’s Health
Three days after McConnell was hospitalized, his wife, Elaine Chao, was spotted in China with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng.
The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America released a statement on Chao’s visit, which read, “Chinese Vice President Han Zheng urged further efforts to strengthen China-U.S. relations when meeting with former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao in Beijing on [June 17].”
The embassy went on to say that Chao said that “stable U.S.-China relations serves the interests of all parties,” adding that she “expressed the willingness to continue making efforts to promote practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the United States and China.”
Further, McConnell’s eldest daughter, Porter McConnell (whose mother is McConnell’s first wife, Sherrill Redmon) — has deactivated her account on X as recently as July 6.
Porter, a progressive political activist who led the Take On Wall Street initiative that began in 2016, has often been an outspoken ideological opponent of Republicans, as noted by The Independent.
