Devoted pet owner and shrimp boat captain Keith “Kiwi” Soffes said he was out on his fishing boat when his dog, Monster, fell off the boat and got lost in the calm, slick waters.

Keith said that Monster normally tagged along with him on the shrimp boat while he worked throughout the day and made daily runs along the coast of San Leon, Texas.

However, on this day, the pet owner said she fell overboard while they were out in Galveston Bay and he didn’t realize it until he were already five miles out into the ocean.

Once he realized she was missing, he drove around everywhere for hours looking for the dog with no luck, so turned to social media and posted a picture of her hoping someone would recognize her and help get her back to her rightful owner.

“She had been on the boat her whole life since she was a puppy. I searched and searched…hopefully somebody picked her up. We were around marker number 71. If anyone here’s any talk about her please contact me. Totally heartbroken,” Keith wrote on Facebook.

Over the next several days, people saw his post and commented with prayers for her safe return and tips on where she might be. Finally, after five days passed, Monster was finally located tied up near a trailer park. She apparently swam five miles back to shore and someone found her and tied her up.

After reuniting with his beloved pet, Keith said he has never cried so much in his life. He took Monster out for a hamburger and ice cream to celebrate her making is back home.

He said she was tired, but overall in good health. From now on though, she’ll be wearing a life jacket and a tracking device.
