Dolly Parton Faces Recent Health Issues
Dolly Parton is exploring a new way to bring her music to fans as she continues dealing with health issues that have limited her ability to appear in person.
Parton was scheduled to appear at Dollywood on August 14 for the dedication of the theme park’s new ride, NightFlight Expedition, and a parade. Just one day prior, a spokesman for Dollywood announced that the “I Will Always Love You” singer would no longer be in attendance.
The announcement was the latest in a series of canceled events for Dolly, who has experienced health struggles in recent months. Following the death of her husband, Carl Dean, in March 2025, Dolly canceled a series of Las Vegas shows, citing health concerns.
“The good news is, I’m responding really well to meds and treatments, and I’m improving every day. The bad news is, it’s gonna take me a little while before I’m up to stage-performance level because some of the meds and treatments make me a little bit swimmy-headed,” she said at the time.
While Parton has not revealed exactly what she is being treated for, she has previously spoken publicly about ongoing kidney stone issues, as well as problems affecting her immune and digestive systems.
Dolly Parton Explores New Ways To Bring Music To Fans
In a new interview with PEOPLE, Parton said she’s hoping to have the opportunity to share music with fans in a completely new way.
She also pointed out that her recent health struggles are not the first serious health challenges she has faced. Parton recalled being “down for several months with female issues” in the early 1980s, noting that she has experienced difficult periods with her health before.
“It’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health,” Parton says. “But I think because we live in a 24/7 world with social media, everything gets magnified in ways it wasn’t years ago. I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I’m the Queen of Social Media AI! Seriously, though, even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’.”
According to the country music icon, she and her team are reportedly in the early stages of working with companies that specialize in “avatar performances.”
Avatar performances typically use digital technology to create a virtual version of an artist that can appear onstage and perform for an audience. Depending on the production, the digital figure can be paired with live musicians, dancers, special effects and prerecorded or digitally integrated vocals.
While Parton has not revealed exactly what her potential virtual performances would look like, the concept could allow fans to experience a digital version of her onstage even when she is unable to appear in person.
In the meantime, the “Jolene” singer remains as ambitious as ever. She recently announced plans for the forthcoming Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum in downtown Nashville, giving fans a chance to experience her life through a collection of exhibits and memorabilia. The museum is billed as the largest exhibit celebrating Parton’s life in the world to date.
