Dolly Says Her Husband Was “Jealous” Over Her Halftime Outfit

Taking the stage at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff Halftime Show, Dolly gained a large amount of attention by wearing a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader outfit, sparking both love and criticism. Despite the debates surrounding her clothes, Dolly revealed in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE that her husband of 57 years, Carl Dean, had his own lighthearted opinion.

In the interview, Dolly shared, “It turned out pretty cool and my husband liked it. He said, ‘Those shorts were a little too short.’ I said, ‘Jealous?,’” she joked.

She added, “And I said, ‘They weren’t as short as the other girls!’ He was just being funny. I think he thought — because everybody’s making a to-do over it — he thought, well, maybe you shouldn’t be showing your butt at that age. But anyway, he got a kick out of it too.”

Dolly and Carl Dean have celebrated more than five decades of marriage, marking an incredible milestone when it comes to celebrity relationships. The duo initially crossed paths at a laundromat and famously enjoyed their first date at McDonald’s before exchanging vows in 1966. They have kept their relationship largely private, with Carl making only a few public appearances throughout their time together. Despite the low profile, Dolly has openly expressed that he is her number one supporter.

“I married a really good man, a guy that’s completely different from me,” she stated during a 2015 interview with Parade. “He loves to hear about the things I do. I love to hear about the things he does. So we enjoy each other’s company.”
