Ella released her song “Choosin’ Texas” back in October, and it’s quickly become a huge moment in her career.

Last month, the track reached #1 on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, marking the first time she had topped the chart as a solo artist. It’s also the fastest-rising solo song at U.S. country radio this decade, making its way into the Top 10 in just 8 weeks.

And who would have thought all of this would come from a fun conversation she had with fellow country star Miranda Lambert?

The Wild Story That Inspired “Choosin’ Texas”

If you didn’t already know, Miranda is a co-writer on “Choosin’ Texas,” along with Ella. The story behind the song is actually inspired by a wild, real-life moment that happened to Miranda years ago.

Before the song was officially released, Ella teased it at a few of her shows. During one performance in Nashville, she gave the crowd a sneak peek and shared how the song came together.

It all started at a writer’s retreat she attended with Miranda. The two of them were chatting when Miranda shared a hilarious story.

“She told me she had a pet kangaroo, and she was doing something, she was driving down a dirt road, and the kangaroo was in the back seat, and the dog was in the front seat. There was a lot going on,” Ella explained.

She continued, “Then she got pulled over with a kangaroo in the passenger seat. And I was like, ‘This story’s as good as I thought it would be.’ She said the lady cop pulled her over, and she’s like, ‘Of course I have Texas plates on the back of my car.’”

After hearing that, it’s like the lyrics practically wrote themselves.

“I was walking to the bathroom and I started to go, ‘She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way he’s two-steppin’ around the room.’ And Miranda was walking behind me to the bathroom, a separate one, and she was like, ‘Wait a minute! The b***h he went with, she’s from Texas, I can tell.’ The girl he went with, you know?…And from there, I think the song fell out in about 30 minutes.”
