Bruce Willis Diagnosed With Aphasia

Actor Bruce Willis was first diagnosed with aphasia, a condition affecting his ability to communicate, in the spring of 2022.

In February 2023, his family confirmed that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia, a more specific and serious form of cognitive decline, forcing him to retire from acting.

His wife, Emma, shared a post on Father’s Day last year, providing a small glimpse into Bruce’s journey and how the diagnosis has drastically changed their family’s life.

Emma Heming Willis Remains Bruce’s Primary Care Taker

During a conversation with Cameron Oaks Rogers on her podcast, Conversations with Cam, Emma shared that Bruce isn’t truly aware of his diagnosis.

“I think that’s like the blessing and the curse of this, is that he never connected the dots that he had this disease, and I’m really happy about that. I’m really happy that he doesn’t know about it,” Emma shared.

According to Emma, Bruce has what’s called “anosognosia,” a condition where “your brain can’t recognize one or more other health conditions you have.” She shared this is common among those battling mental health disorders.

“People think this might be denial, like they don’t want to go to the doctor because they’re like, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine,’ actually, this is the anosognosia that comes into play. It’s not denial. It’s just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease,” she further explained.

Emma has become a powerful advocate in the world of dementia awareness since Bruce’s diagnosis, raising funds and community support for FTD research and resources.

Emma Shares How She Overcomes The Guilt Of Enjoying Life Despite Bruce’s Condition

Emma recently reached a major milestone and celebrated her 50th birthday surrounded by family and close friends.

Opening up in a recent conversation with Hoda Kotb on her Making Space podcast, Bruce’s wife opened up about her decision to mark the occasion with a celebration despite the challenges she continues to face while caring for her husband.

“I, you know, have not really been in the celebratory feelings of late, I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything, but I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, ‘You know what? You don’t wanna miss out on your 50th. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion,’” Emma shared. “And I really sat with that, and I thought about it. And I thought, ‘You know what? I don’t wanna look back and think, why didn’t I celebrate 50?’ ”

When it came time to plan her milestone birthday, Emma knew exactly what she wanted. She told her friends she wanted to enjoy tacos, drink a margarita, and spend the day surrounded by the people she loves.

“I really was looking forward to 50 because I have to say my 40s felt like a little bit of a doozy,” she said. “I was just ready to embrace my 50s. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about, you know, going into your 50s with much more confidence.”

However Emma admitted that big celebrations like this always bring up mixed emotions, including tons of guilt.

“I always wrestle with it, you know?” Emma said. “I think guilt is something that I am always carrying, but I’ve learned that it is really not helpful. What I know is I always go back to what would my husband want for me?”
