On September 10, Charlie Kirk Was Shot And Killed During A Speaking Event In Utah
Almost two weeks ago, conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was killed after being struck by a single bullet during an appearance at Utah Valley University.
The 31-year-old was there for the first stop of his American Comeback tour.
A statewide manhunt quickly followed Kirk’s murder. Just two days later, the FBI confirmed that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson had been taken into custody after a family member recognized him in photos released by authorities.
On September 17, Robinson was formally charged with seven counts, including aggravated murder.
The news was announced during a press conference, where Utah County Attorney Jeffrey S. Gray outlined the charges against Robinson.
Gray also revealed that he intends to seek the death penalty, stating:
“I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently as county attorney, based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime.”
Charlie Kirk’s Widow, Erika, Addresses Whether She Wants His Shooter To Face The Death Penalty
Charlie Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children, a son and a daughter.
Since his death, Erika has stepped forward to honor his memory through several public appearances.
Just days after her husband’s death, she gave her first interview, speaking with the New York Times.
She spoke about her grieving process and shared how her faith has helped her cope with the sudden and unexpected loss.
Erika said she’s able to “see the Bible in such technicolor. To be so serene in saying, ‘Thy will be done. I surrender to it.’ Do I like it? No. That was the love of my life, my soul mate, my best friend. But God’s plan is always greater than ours.”
Despite the many rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding her husband’s assassination, Erika says she doesn’t believe in them.
“I’m a strong believer that this was God’s plan,” she said. “And it’s so clear-cut. It couldn’t be more Charlie.”
There’s also been a lot of curiosity about what Erika believes should happen to Robinson if convicted. She revealed that she doesn’t want to be the one who pushes for the death penalty.
“I’ve had so many people ask, ‘Do you feel anger toward this man? Like, do you want to seek the death penalty?’ I’ll be honest. I told our lawyer, I want the government to decide this. I do not want that man’s blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is like: ‘Uh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?’ And that keeps me from being in heaven, from being with Charlie?”
A few days later, Erika once again touched on her feelings towards her husband’s shooter.
On Sunday, September 21, Kirk’s memorial service was held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. More than 90,000 people attended to honor his memory.
The nearly five-hour service included many guest speakers, including Vice President JD Vance, with President Trump delivering the closing remarks.
During the evening, Erika also took the stage to give an emotional, nearly 30-minute eulogy for her husband.
During her speech, she made a surprising revelation, telling everyone in attendance that she had forgiven the killer.
“That man, that young man, I forgive him,” she said. “I forgive him because it was what Christ did and it is what Charlie would do.”
