Officials said the bear charged out of a thick wooded area and lunged after a father and son in the middle of a hunting excursion. The outdoorsmen were hunting along a gated road when the bear attacked and they fought her before killing her in self-defense.

“The two individuals sustained significant injuries before they were able to shoot and kill the bear,” FWP reported.

The authorities have not disclosed any further details about the status of the individuals but investigators have concluded that she was about 20 years old and may still have cubs out there on their own in the wilderness. Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks have placed several cameras in the area in hopes to find and identify any lost cubs if there are any.

“Bear attacks on humans are rare, but Montana is bear country with populations of grizzly and black bears that frequent higher and lower elevations,” according to FWP.
