Spain Defeats Argentina In The 2026 World Cup

The world’s attention has been on the game of soccer this summer as the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The expanded tournament featured 48 national teams competing in 16 host cities, making it the largest World Cup in history.

The United States competed in a memorable run before being eliminated by Belgium in the Round of 16. They were just one win away from their first quarterfinal appearance since 2002.

The championship game took place on Sunday (July 19), at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The final featured a highly anticipated match between defending World Cup champions Argentina and reigning European champions Spain.

Spain captured its second men’s World Cup championship with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

FIFA To Investigate Post Game Fight

FIFA is now investigating the post-match altercation that broke out following Sunday’s World Cup final, where several Argentina players and coaching staff clashed with members of Spain’s team on the field after the final whistle.

Ferran Torres scored the match-winning goal in the 106th minute, but emotions had already boiled over before the game ended. Argentina was reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernández received a red card in stoppage time for a challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.

Video from the aftermath of the match appears to show several heated confrontations involving players and staff from both teams. Argentina defenders Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina were seen making contact with Spain’s Eric García and Rodri, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala also appeared to strike Dani Olmo during the melee.

The confrontation continued as Molina confronted Rodri, who was also involved in a verbal exchange with his former Manchester City teammate, Nicolás Otamendi.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, along with several players from both sides, stepped in to calm the situation and help bring the altercation under control.

“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” FIFA said in a statement.
