The “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” singer appeared virtually on the Today show and spoke candidly about her relationship with the country star. Both Stefani and Shelton had gone through public divorces prior to becoming a couple. When asked if divorce made Stefani “gun shy” about getting engaged or married again, the singer explained:

“I think there was a lot to consider when you have so many people involved. Children, and their hearts, and everybody in my family [and] his family, we all went through a lot together.”

Stefani also admitted that she and Shelton talked about getting married long before the country crooner popped the question. Still, Stefani acknowledged that the couple had to heal before starting a healthy marriage together.

“So I think in a romantic way, when you fall in love so hard and so unexpectedly — and so late in your life — you think ‘I want to marry you!’ That’s the first romantic reaction, like, ‘Let’s get married,'” Stefani explained. “So we always talked about it, of course, and I think that as the years were going by, it didn’t need to happen. There was a lot of healing to do.”

Stefani also reflected on the early days of the couple’s relationship and gushed over Shelton’s best qualities. After five years, Stefani is still awed at how their relationship bloomed out of heartache.

“He’s so gifted and so unique and talented and he really is my best friend. And I feel just so excited that I have someone in my life that now I have a chance at happiness for a long time to come and it’s just a blessing, the whole thing, and it is a miracle.” Stefani explained, later adding. “It’s weird how things happen and you just don’t see things that are right around the corner after such devastation.”
