It was a terrifying moment for 15-year-old Cecelia Celis who was at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada making tacos with her family when a giant hawk swooped down and attacked her small Yorkie puppy named Lulu.
Lulu was outside on the patio with Cecelia’s other Yorkie pup and she said she heard Lulu barking and thought the dogs were just playing at first. However, she said she noticed the bird’s wing flapping and that’s when she realized her pet was actually in danger.
Cecelia ran out of the house onto the patio and screamed at the hawk trying to scare it into letting go of her dog but that was not working on the massive bird.
“We see a huge bird fly up, and I yell at the bird, ‘Get off my dog! Get off my dog!” Celis told KSNV.
Scrambling around in a panic, the only thing she could think of was to grab a pillow cushion from an outside chair and she started swatting the bird, hoping it would let go.
The hawk was big and strong but it realized it had met its match with the human and released its powerful razor-sharp talons off the dog’s neck and took off flying out of there.
Her heroic act saved her dog’s life.
“We just hope that the bird gets captured. Bird comes out of nowhere. It could happen to any of us,” Celis said.
After the attack was over the family rushed their beloved pet to the local veterinarian for medical treatment to treat a puncture wound she sustained on her neck
“I thought she was gonna die or something, because that’s a big bird compared to her,” Celis said.
Moving forward, Cecelia says she will not be letting her dogs go outside of the house without her family’s supervision anymore. This incident happened back in February of 2019 and since then the dog has made a full recovery.
