Cargo Plane Disappears Off Pakistan’s Coast
On Tuesday (July 7), a cargo plane carrying five crew members disappeared off the coast of Karachi, Pakistan, aviation officials said.
The Boeing 737 was flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi when it rapidly descended and lost contact with air traffic controllers at approximately 9:21 p.m. local time, according to Pakistan’s Airport Authority.
Officials said the crew reported a navigation system problem just minutes before communication was lost.
The aircraft was operated by K2 Airways, a private cargo carrier based in Karachi that was founded in 2018. Authorities have not released details about the condition of the crew as search-and-rescue efforts continue.
K2 Airways released a statement Wednesday identifying the five crew members aboard the missing cargo plane, saying the airline was working closely with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies.
Preliminary flight data from Flightradar24 indicates the Boeing 737 experienced significant altitude changes before rapidly descending and disappearing from radar.
The Search Continues For Five Missing Crew Members
A search operation is now underway for the five crew members who were on board the cargo aircraft after its wreckage was located. The wreckage was reportedly found after 12 hours of searching in the Arabian Sea off the coastal town of Ormara in southern Pakistan.
