Hamm played Monty Miller, the owner of M-Tex, the company that Billy Bob Thornton’s character Tommy Norris basically runs as its Landman.

According to a voice-over from Thornton in the Season One trailer, a Landman is someone who secures the land for oil companies and then manages the people who work on it, from the oil riggers and roughnecks to the higher ups in the corporate offices.

He says, “First parts simple, it’s the second part that can get you killed.”

Hamm’s character didn’t go out in the oil field, if at all, seeing as he was making deals in the office left and right.

Jon Hamm’s Monty was married to Demi Moore’s character, Cami Miller, who had little to nothing to do with M-Tex Oil in Season One.

In a shocking turn of events, Monty suffered a heart attack in the Season One finale and died in the hospital. While this set up an incredible storyline for Season Two, it did break some hearts because Monty was such an interesting character.

After a thrilling second season, find out where M-Tex, Tommy, and Cami stand here.

Jon Hamm Reveals The Real Reason His Character Was Killed

Many people were upset with the passing of Monty Miller and the fact that he wasn’t in Season Two, but according to actor Jon Hamm, his character was always supposed to die.

Here’s why.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter from January 2025, Hamm revealed that his character was never meant to be in Season Two, so they had to kill him off.

He was asked if the one-season commitment was appealing to him and he revealed that was all he could give.

“My other commitments don’t really allow me to be a series regular on another show,” he revealed, adding, “I’m very happy that they asked me to do this.”

He also explained the reason he said yes, even for just one season: Taylor Sheridan and Billy Bob Thornton.

“I’ll tell you exactly what it was — it was the ability to work with Taylor [Sheridan] and Billy Bob [Thornton]. Those are guys whose careers I’ve been really paying attention to. They’re just working at the top of their game. I knew the show was going to be good; I didn’t know it was really going to spark in the culture the way it has, and that part of it is even better. It’s always fun to be a part of the conversation when you’re in something that people really respond to. I’ve had that on a couple of occasions,” he said in the interview.

His other commitments include the show Your Friends & Neighbors, which began production in April 2024, while Landman filmed from February-June 2024, as well as Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, which filmed that year from July-December.

Your Friends & Neighbors was picked up for a second season in 2025 and Apple confirmed a fifth season of The Morning Show was in the works, so it’s safe to say, Hamm is a busy guy!

While we did miss him in Season Two, the show definitely wouldn’t have been the same, and we agree with the choices Sheridan and crew made!
