Katie Couric Reveals She Was Diagnosed With “Mysterious” Memory Loss Disorder

Katie Couric is sharing her frightening experience with sudden memory loss, which doctors later diagnosed as transient global amnesia.
The longtime journalist shared her health scare in a Substack post earlier this week titled “The Day I’ll Never Remember.”
Her sudden memory loss happened on Saturday, June 27, while she was in Colorado for the Aspen Ideas Festival.
According to Couric, the morning started out just like any other. She remembers taking a quick trip to a local farmers market while her husband, John Molner, was at the gym.
“I bought some beautiful peaches and nectarines, a big bag of kettle corn and a cute straw hat I really didn’t need,” Couric recalled. “I headed back, ate a bowl of cereal with one of the peaches, and got dressed for an afternoon at the Aspen Ideas Festival. I decided to wear a white linen suit, a navy and white knit sleeveless shirt, and my new hat. John drove with me to the campus of the Aspen Institute and was excited to go to the hot dog stand for lunch.”
But after that, things took a sudden turn. The 69-year-old says she doesn’t remember anything that happened afterwards, including the two panels she spoke on at the festival.
“I have no idea what we talked about or of what occurred when the panels ended,” she wrote.
In the post, her husband explained that he noticed something was off after her second panel. He said she seemed “weak and dizzy,” which concerned him enough to take her to Aspen Valley Hospital.
There, Couric underwent several tests to determine the cause of the unexpected episode. Initially, doctors thought she could be having a stroke. They tested her with simple questions, like the date and who the current president was, but Couric was unable to answer them correctly.
“I wasn’t sure of the month. I thought it was 2024. And I believed Joe Biden was president,” she said.
Couric also failed to remember her newborn granddaughter, Virginia Louise.
After an MRI, doctors were able to rule out a stroke. However, the results helped them reach the correct diagnosis. The former TODAY Show host had experienced transient global amnesia.
What Is Transient Global Amnesia?
In simple terms, transient global amnesia is a rare condition where someone suddenly loses their short-term memory.
During an episode, a person may not be able to create new memories for a period of time, but they are still aware of who they are and what’s happening around them, per the Mayo Clinic.
This can cause someone to repeat the same questions over and over while also being unable to remember recent events.
The condition is not usually considered dangerous, with memory resolving itself fully in 24 hours. However, it’s always a good idea to seek medical attention for any concerns.
Why Did This Happen To Katie Couric?
There isn’t an easy explanation as to why transient global amnesia occurs. Although it mostly affects middle-aged or older folks, it can really happen to anyone.
Some studies suggest that people with a history of migraines are more likely to be at risk. Cardiovascular issues, physical exhaustion, and emotional stress are also considered triggers for the temporary memory loss.
“The cause seems to be as mysterious as the brain itself,” Couric added.
She ended her post by saying, “While this was a freaky occurrence, it could have been much more serious. So ultimately, I’m relieved — even though several hours of a Saturday in June will always be missing for me.”
