Yellowstone Came To An End On December 15th

Kevin Costner, the former star of Yellowstone, offered some brief comments about the show’s finale after it aired on Sunday (December 15th).

Costner played Yellowstone‘s patriarch John Dutton from Season 1 through the first half of Season 5. But he did not return to film the second half of Season 5.

Season 5’s midseason finale aired in January 2023. Then, Yellowstone went on an extended and unexpected hiatus.

Rumors circulated that behind-the-scenes conflicts with Costner contributed to production delays. Then, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes delayed production even further.

The cast finally returned to set earlier this year. But, Costner confirmed he did not return to film the new episodes.

Costner later explained the reason behind his absence.

The actor said he “didn’t quit Yellowstone. He wanted enough time in his schedule to work on his Horizon movie saga, but contract negotiations with the Yellowstone team didn’t pan out.

“There was contractual things that would allow for both things to be done, but because both things were contractual, you had to make room for the other thing. There was room, but it was difficult for them to keep their schedule,” Costner said.

Following Costner’s departure, Yellowstone pivoted to change the course of its remaining episodes.

John Dutton died in the first episode of the second half of Season 5. The rest of the season centered around his death and how his family members reacted to it.

Costner told SiriusXM’s The Michael Smerconish Program that he “didn’t see” the episode about John Dutton’s death. It turns out he didn’t have much to say about the finale, either.

A video obtained by The Daily Mail shows Costner briefly addressing the Yellowstone finale. He admitted he didn’t watch the episode, saying, “I’m not thinking about [the finale], I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts, we’ll just let it go.

Costner was also asked about his former co-star Luke Grimes’ recent comments that they haven’t talked since he left the show. Grimes played Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, the son of Costner’s John Dutton.

“I do have his phone number—I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to,” Grimes said.

Costner brushed off the question about Grimes, saying, “No. We’re done talking.”

Now that he’s done with Yellowstone, Costner is busy focusing on his Horizon series. The first film debuted in June 2024. The second chapter’s original release was postponed, and a new premiere date has yet to be revealed.
