Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Sees Redemption After Becoming Available for Online Streaming

Kevin Costner’s Horizon is gaining more traction now that it is available for streaming at home.

The first chapter of Kevin Costner’s Horizon movie saga premiered in theaters on June 28.

Expected to be a box office hit, the film’s initial performance fell short of expectations. It earned only $11 million during its opening weekend, landing in third place at the box office behind A Quiet Place: Day One and Inside Out 2.

By the end of its second week in theaters, Horizon had accumulated $23.2 million in worldwide earnings after Costner reportedly invested $38 million of his own money into the project. By its third week, Horizon dropped three spots in the box office rankings, settling in at sixth place.

After just 18 days in theaters, Costner’s Horizon transitioned to online streaming, and the Western drama is showing promising signs.

The first installment of the planned four-part series is available for streaming through premium video on demand (PVOD) and can be rented or purchased on multiple platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV+, VUDU, and Google Play.

After releasing on these streaming services, the film climbed to #1 on the VOD Top 10 list. The surge in viewership is understandable, given the film’s 181-minute runtime. Many viewers likely preferred watching it from the comfort of their own homes rather than sitting in a theater for that length of time.

Due to the rocky start the series has experienced, Costner’s Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided to cancel the planned August release of Horizon‘s second installment.

A statement from the film’s production company, New Line Cinema, revealed that the second chapter of Horizon was pulled from the August theatrical release schedule in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience for the first film.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2’on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max,” a spokesperson from New Line Cinema said in an exclusive statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run.”

A new release date for Horizon: Chapter 2 has not yet been announced, but it is still set to premiere in theaters. Kevin Costner initially planned for Horizon to be a four-part saga. However, with the first two installments having a combined total of approximately $100 million to make, the future of the third and fourth films may be uncertain.
