After 64 years, KFC is suspending the use of its “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” slogan. At least, that is, while the world is still in the midst of a pandemic.

In a press release issued on Monday (August 24), KFC poked fun at itself by dubbing its famous slogan, “The Winner of the Award for the Most Inappropriate Slogan for 2020.”

Of course, the reason why KFC dubs the “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” slogan to be “inappropriate” is because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While people around the world are being told to keep their hands away from their faces, it seems counterintuitive to encourage them to lick their fingers after enjoying a bucket of the Colonel’s chicken.

Think we can all agree, this year has been like no other and, right now, our slogan doesn’t feel quite right,” reads KFC’s press release about the suspension of its longtime slogan.

The press release also quoted KFC’s global chief marketing officer, Catherine Tan-Gillespie:

“We find ourselves in a unique situation—having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment. While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.”

Though fans of the “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” slogan can breathe a sigh of relief. KFC promises the return of the the phrase “when the time is right” and says it will only be gone “for a little while.”

…don’t worry – the slogan will be back” KFC promises at the end of its press release.
