Lainey Wilson’s Whimsical New Single Has Ties To The Wizard Of Oz
Lainey Wilson celebrated the first day of summer by dropping a dreamy music video for her new single, “Somewhere Over Laredo.”
Wilson released “Somewhere Over Laredo” on May 23. The track offers a nod to Judy Garland’s beloved rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” which she performed in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
“Somewhere Over Laredo” also mentions Alan Jackson‘s “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow.” That shout-out comes in the lyrics, “You’re on my mind every time I’m chasing this neon rainbow…“
Writing about the single upon its release, Wilson said:
“When I’m flying between shows I catch myself looking out the window, talking to God, dreaming, or even reminiscing. ‘Somewhere Over Laredo’ tells a story that speaks to that. I’ve always been inspired by putting myself into other peoples’ shoes and telling stories from others’ perspective, but I’ve found a new creative avenue with this one putting myself back into a pair of shoes that I wore years ago.”

Lainey Wilson Makes “A Little Movie Magic” In New Music Video For “Somewhere Over Laredo”
Lainey Wilson released the official music video for “Somewhere Over Laredo” on Friday, June 20. While describing the video, Wilson said, “We made a little movie magic with this one.”
The video opens with a title card with the song’s name. The card used a font reminiscent of an old-time movie, much like The Wizard of Oz.
We see Wilson boarding a plane, preparing to take off to her next show. She takes a window seat and stares out at the clouds below, and her mind starts wandering as she reminisces about her “lonestar crossed lover.“
From there, the video shows Wilson in several dream-like scenes. She free-falls through the sky and “wakes up” on a bed in the middle of a field connected to a tiny farm below.
Then, Wilson is joined by her “Toto,” her beloved dog Hippie Mae, who wanders the desert with her. Subsequent scenes show Wilson riding a horse as vibrant red rocks surround them. Eventually, they disappear into pink, cotton candy-like clouds.
As the video ends, a tornado surrounds Wilson in the wheat field. At that point, an unknown figure literally yanks her out of her dream, and she wakes up as her plane lands in the real world.
