Yellowstone Makes Its Long-Awaited Return On Sunday, November 10

Luke Grimes feels “it’s a miracle” that Yellowstone could continue following the departure of former series lead Kevin Costner.

To catch you up to speed, Yellowstone‘s fifth season went on a midseason hiatus in January 2023. The show intended to return later that year, but the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes paused production.

There were also rumors of behind-the-scenes drama. Costner, who played John Dutton, eventually confirmed he was not returning to the show. He said:

“I just realized I’m just not going to be able to continue Season 5B or into the future. It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning…”

Since then, other cast members have spoken about their experiences filming the show without Costner but haven’t revealed his character’s fate.

Yellowstone returns with the second half of Season 5 on Sunday, November 10. While Season 5 was originally billed as Yellowstone‘s final season, some signs have pointed toward a potential sixth season. Still, several of the stars speak about Yellowstone‘s fifth season as if it’s its last.

A modern-day spin-off series is also in the works, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox starring.

Luke Grimes Addresses Kevin Costner’s Absence And Says “It’s A Miracle” Yellowstone Could Go On Without Him

Luke Grimes, who plays John Dutton’s son, Kayce Dutton, recently sat down for an interview with Holler to talk about the show’s new episodes. He didn’t go into specifics about John Dutton’s fate but did address Costner’s absence.

“So this season, it felt like it was just another challenge – but we were able to do it. It’s a miracle that the show was able to stay the course through all of that. [Kevin Costner] leaving was just another hump to get over. I think Taylor wrote it beautifully, and we executed it. I think the fans will be very, very happy with the ending.”

This isn’t the first time Grimes has shared his positive feelings about Yellowstone‘s return. He previously called the ending “beautiful,” “perfect,” and “very, very profound.”

Despite Costner’s absence, he is heavily featured in Yellowstone‘s dramatic trailer for its upcoming episodes. Watch it below.

Although Costner is no longer with the show, this trailer makes it clear that John Dutton’s presence still looms large over the Yellowstone universe.
