Country Duo Maddie & Tae Announce Split, But Don’t Want To Call It A “Breakup”

After 15 years of singing together, Maddie & Tae have decided to split up, for now.

Maddie Marlow Font and Taylor “Tae” Dye Kerr shared the news in an interview PEOPLE published on Monday (December 8).

But the two longtime friends fall short of calling this a “breakup.”

“It sounds so dramatic, and we don’t want it to feel that way,” Maddie said. “You’ve seen other duos that break up, and they hate each other and blah-blah-blah. I know the world’s probably ready for us to hate each other, especially because we’re women. That just happens for some reason. And that’s why we want to do it this way, to show what it looks like to be two strong, independent, loving women that…”

… are embarking on separate journeys,” Tae finished, adding. “But still together.

Although they’ve put a pause on their journey as a musical duo, Maddie and Tae aren’t severing ties in their personal lives.

Even though we’re not gonna go on this journey as Maddie & Tae together, we’re still walking and doing life together outside of it, Maddie said. “And I think I’m really excited to just be best friends and nurture our friendship and not have to worry as much about the work and still get to raise our babies together. None of that changes.”

Why Are Maddie & Tae Splitting Up?

Maddie & Tae also wanted to be upfront with fans about the reason behind their split. Tae wished to place her career on hold to focus on her family.

I’m a mother, too, so I totally understand the pull,” Maddie said about her best friend. “We both were very aware of T’s heart just not being in touring as much.”

While Tae steps away from the spotlight, Maddie will continue singing, solo.

“I’m dipping my toe in some gospel sounds and a little bit of that R&B-soul thing that I love. But I think my heart is just in making impactful music that reaches people,” Maddie said about her new solo music.

But the pair isn’t ready to fully close the Maddie & Tae chapter of their lives. They’ve chosen to leave things open for a reunion down the line.

“We’re leaving this so open-ended because, you know, we might make another record one day,” Maddie said. “We might go do some tour dates one day.”

She continued, “But just in this season, it doesn’t feel aligned for us to do it together.”

The duo also addressed the news on their personal Instagram page, writing:

“Thank you for all the love as we step into this new bittersweet chapter. We both feel overwhelmed with gratitude for what we’ve built with y’all…Thank you for making our wildest dreams come true and we hope you stay close by to watch us chase some new dreams. We love you so much and hope you still come shake ya booty with us on tour next year.”

As mentioned in their post, Maddie & Tae still have performances planned for 2026. Their final concert is scheduled for June 19 at the Winstock Country Music Festival.

Who Are Maddie & Tae?

Maddie & Tae burst onto the scene with their debut single, “Girl in a Country Song,” in 2014. The track reached the #1 spot on the Country Airplay chart, and instantly put the duo on the map.

More hits followed, including another #1, “Die From a Broken Heart,” in 2019. That song has since been certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA.

Other hits in the duo’s catalog include “Fly,” “Shut Up and Fish,” “Sierra,” “Friends Don’t,” and “Woman You Got.”

The duo has released three albums together, the most recent being Love & Light, which they shared in May 2025.

Tae is married to songwriter-producer Josh Kerr, and they share two children. Maddie is married to Jonah Font, and they have a son.

Speaking specifically about her daughter, Leighton, Tae said:

“I’ll tell her that I had a really, really big dream that God put on my heart, and I chased it down to the best of my abilities with my very best friend in the world. And then one day I saw that she was growing up right in front of my eyes, and I just couldn’t miss another second.”

We wish Maddie & Tae the best in the future, whatever it may hold…
