Marshals is a spin-off of Yellowstone, which ended in 2024. It follows Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) in pursuit of a “new beginning” for himself and his son, Tate (played by Brecken Merrill).
Kayce is attempting to outrun the mistakes of his blood-stained past. He’s also running away from his grief, as the series premiere reveals that his wife, Monica, died of cancer.
So Kayce picks up a badge and joins an elite team of U.S. Marshals in Montana. The team includes one of his old friends, Pete “Cal” Calvin (played by Logan Marshall-Green), who served in the Navy SEALS with Kayce.
We’re only two episodes into the season so far, and we’ve already seen a lot of action and drama. Episode 2 included a reference to the infamous Yellowstone “train station,” which the Marshals characters called “The Zone of Death.” Kayce denied knowing anything about the area, although he definitely does.
The second episode also mentioned Kayce’s brother, Jamie, who was secretly killed by Kayce’s sister, Beth.
Logan Marshall-Green Says A Major Conflict Is Brewing On Marshals
With so many skeletons in his closet, it’s going to be challenging for Kayce Dutton to hide the truth about his past from his new co-workers.
Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Kayce’s buddy, Cal, teased a major conflict that will soon start brewing between the two characters.
Marshall-Green told CNET that tension will build between Cal and Kayce as Cal learns more about who Kayce was and what he did.
“By the end of the season, those questions are going to start getting answered,” Marshall-Green said. “There’s going to be a lot of strife when Cal realizes exactly who Kayce is, and has become, and what he’s done since leaving the SEALs. And it’s not so pretty.“
Understandably, that strife will weigh on Kayce. But the question is, will he break under the pressure?
We’ll just have to keep watching Marshals to learn the answer. Many people are, as the premiere attracted 9.52 million viewers. This made it the most-watched new series premiere for the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
New episodes of Marshals air every Sunday at 8 PM Eastern Time on CBS. Paramount+ Premium subscribers can stream new episodes at that time. Subscribers to the Paramount+ Essential plan can stream new episodes on Mondays.
