Matt Robertson Takes Home Historic Prize
Professional bass fisherman Matt Robertson pulled off an incredible victory at the inaugural WBE World Bass Championship tournament over the weekend. Robertson overcame several challenges to claim the massive grand prize.
The competition made history with a staggering $3.25 million total prize. The tournament awarded $1.25 million to the champion, marking the largest winner’s payout in professional bass fishing history.
“The Champions” tournament was a three-day event that brought 62 competitors to Old Hickory Lake at Sanders Ferry Park, just outside Nashville, Tennessee. The competition featured some of the best anglers from the United States, Canada, and Japan, along with two amateur fishermen known as the “Average Joes.”
After three days of competition, the top 15 anglers advanced to Championship Saturday for a chance to take home the historic grand prize.
The Kentucky native won on the final day of the three-day competition with an impressive 20-pound, 2-ounce catch.
“It’s freaking insane, I don’t think it’s really hit me yet. I just won the biggest tournament ever in bass fishing,” Robertson said following his historic win. “$1.25 million will drastically change my life…This was an awesome experience, this is the Super Bowl of bass fishing, I don’t care what anybody says, I know because I stood on the Super Bowl stage.”
According to its website, World Bass Enterprises was created with the goal of bringing professional bass fishing to a larger audience and give the sport a bigger platform.
Country music star Trace Adkins kicked off the championship round with a special performance of the national anthem, and Riley Green performed as part of WBE Concert 250.
