Megan Moroney Finally Admits That “Who Hurt You?” Is About Riley Green

Megan Moroney finally answers one of her fans’ burning questions: Who is “Who Hurt You?” about.
During a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Megan was asked if she has any songs that always get fans trying to figure out who they’re about. That opened the door for her to finally respond to all the rumors surrounding “Who Hurt You?”
If you aren’t familiar with the drama that surrounds the song, here’s a quick recap:
Megan released “Who Hurt You?” as one of the 15 tracks on her Cloud 9 album back in February. Almost immediately, fans started talking because many were convinced the brutally honest song was about none other than Riley Green.
The two country stars have never publicly confirmed they dated, but fans have long believed they had a brief romance after they were spotted together several times.
Then, there was the awkward moment at the 2025 CMA Awards that had fans convinced there was a love triangle involving Riley, Megan, and Ella Langley.
Needless to say, if Megan and Riley really were together, it doesn’t seem like things ended on the best terms. That’s why so many people assumed “Who Hurt You?” was about him.
The lyrics only added to the speculation. Megan sings “The devil went down to Georgia,” her home state, before adding, “Then he crossed the ‘Bama line,” which listeners took as a reference to Riley being from Alabama.

It wasn’t long after that Riley teased his own track “POS Like Me” on social media. This seemed like a response to Megan; however, Riley has publicly said that the timing was simply a coincidence (but plenty of fans still aren’t convinced).
Megan Moroney Says She “Made It So Obvious” Who The Song Is About
According to Megan, she never meant for the song’s meaning to be a mystery.
“In “Who Hurt You,” I made it so obvious who it’s about that it was, like, you could google it, and that was the point of “Who Hurt You,” she clarifies. “In the past I got frustrated with people. I was trying to hint at things, and then people would be like, “Who is it about?” And I was like, “You know what? I’m just gonna lay it out there.”
So, it seems like fans may have been right all along. Riley is the inspiration behind “Who Hurt You?.”
“I might as well put his first and last name in it,” she continued. “Songwriting is fun, and it’s not meant to be taken so seriously.”
It isn’t often that you find someone in the spotlight who is so open about their personal life. But Megan says she’s able to do that because she isn’t afraid to share her feelings and experiences. She hopes that by being so vulnerable and honest, she can connect with listeners and maybe help them with their own struggles.
She adds, “When I get scared of putting out a song because it’s too personal, I think about how it might help somebody, because every time I’ve done it and I’ve taken the risk, people have come up to me and they’re like, “This song made me dump this guy” and “This song is making me never want to go back to him.” It’s just one of those things where you have to be like, “F*** it. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Megan is currently in the middle of her Cloud 9 Tour, with show dates scheduled until her final show on October 1.
