“Most Beautiful Duck In The World” Emerges At Canada Lake
on May 13, 2020
Some lucky folks in Canada recently were treated to sightings of what is highly considered the “most beautiful duck in the world,” also known as the Mandarin Duck.
The Mandarin Duck is a species native to Asia, Europe, and northern Africa, and is closely related to North America’s wood duck.

The “most beautiful duck in the world” mostly lives in China, Japan, Ireland, Great Britain, and Berlin, but North Carolina has a limited population. Sonoma County in California also has a small population, and there has been a single sighting of a Mandarin Duck in New York’s Central Park. That particular duck has become quite famous, earning the name “Mandarin Patinkin,” a play off the name of actor Mandy Patinkin.

Despite its small populations in the United States, it is quite rare to see one on this side of the pond. Some lucky Canadians spotted one recently, and we couldn’t be more jealous! Like New York, this duck has been spotted on multiple occasions at a British Columbia lake and has been named “Trevor.” He was first seen in 2018, but the crazy amount of people coming to see him kept him away.
He was seen again in November 2019, but then went into hiding again. Because of the lack of people at the lake during this time, Trevor has emerged to make more appearances at British Columbia’s Burnaby Lake.
According to tweets from locals, Trevor has been hanging out with other ducks, a female wood duck in particular, and picks fights with the bigger male ducks.

While both male and female Mandarin Ducks are a sight to see, the reference of “the most beautiful duck in the world” refers to the male ducks.
Check out some photos of both male and female Mandarin Ducks below.
