Retired NASCAR driver Kurt Busch was arrested Tuesday night (August 13) on Driving While Intoxicated charges.

Busch was pulled over in North Carolina on Tuesday night (August 13) at 11:32 PM for going 63 MPH in a 45-MPH zone. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was “conducting speed checks in the area because of citizen complaints.”

In his report, Deputy Zalepka said that when he pulled Busch over, he had “red glassy eyes” and “a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.” Busch admitted to having been drinking before he got behind the wheel.

Busch was also cited for speeding, careless and reckless driving, and Driving While Intoxicated.

Court records show that his blood-alcohol concentration was .17 when the legal limit was .08.

The famed driver was booked at the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was released a couple of hours later at 2:36 AM. His driver’s license has been suspended for 30 days, and he will appear in court on September 19.

Busch released a statement on Wednesday (August 14) that read,

“I’m very disappointed in myself and I apologize to my family, my racing family, and to my fans. I will work with the authorities to rectify the situation and work with the county to make it a safer place in the future.”

This is not Busch’s first time being busted for drinking and driving. In 2005, he was pulled over for reckless driving and suspicion of Driving Under the Influence in Arizona. In that case, he completed 50 hours of community service, which he completed in one year.

Kurt Busch retired from racing in 2022 after a crash at the Pocono Raceway left him with a terrible concussion.

Before that race, Busch had a 23-year NASCAR racing career. He won a total of 34 races while making 776 starts. He raced for Team Penske, Roush Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing, Furniture Row Racing, and Phoenix Racing. According to Iredell Free News, his “career earnings topped $90 million.”

Kurt is the older brother of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion.
