If you’re a sucker for a sad song or sappy movie, you may be glad to hear the results of a latest study that reveals how crying can help you lose weight.

AsiaOne reports that crying can be beneficial to one’s health in many ways. According to new findings, hormones released during a good cry affect cortisol levels. Releasing bottled up emotions with a heavy cry can help balance those levels.

Biochemist William Frey even found out that stress-induced tears flush numerous toxic substances from the body, and concluded that weeping is an excretory process that removes such substances that can build up during times of emotional stress.

While any crying can be beneficial, you’ll want to hold those tears in until 7:00 p.m. for the maximum benefit, according to the study. Shedding tears between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. are the optimal hours to let those emotions out due to the fact that it’s during those hours that most people are relaxed and in a place where they can let the tears flow.

So, cue up that sad song playlist or get ready to binge watch your favorite tearjerking movie. Let us know what some of your favorites are so we can add them to our list!
